The NEW Polestar 5 has been officially revealed, marking a company-defining step for Volvo’s EV spin-off brand. Positioned as a flagship electric grand tourer, the Polestar 5 combines up to 416 miles of range, 350 kW ultra-fast charging, and as much as 871 bhp, putting it squarely in contention with rivals such as the Porsche Taycan.
Polestar 5 Performance and Powertrain
Polestar is offering two versions of the 5:
- Polestar 5 Dual Motor:
- 737 bhp, 599 lb-ft of torque
- 0–60 mph in 3.8 seconds
- 416-mile range (WLTP)
- Polestar 5 Performance:
- 871 bhp, 749 lb-ft of torque
- 0–60 mph in just 3.1 seconds
- 351-mile range
Both models feature all-wheel drive and ride on Polestar’s new bespoke scalable aluminum platform, the brand’s first architecture not shared with Volvo or Lotus. Despite the lightweight material, the car tips the scales at around 2,500 kg, heavier than the Porsche Taycan by roughly 150 kg.
Polestar 5 Charging and Battery
Every Polestar 5 comes equipped with a 106 kWh usable capacity battery. Thanks to its 800V electrical system, the EV supports 350 kW DC fast charging, enabling a 10–80% top-up in just 22 minutes under ideal conditions.
- Home charging: A full charge via wallbox takes approximately 11 hours.
- Vehicle-to-load (V2L): Not supported at launch, though Polestar has hinted it may arrive in future updates.
Polestar 5 Interior and Technology
Inside, the Polestar 5 emphasizes a minimalist yet luxurious Scandinavian design. Highlights include:
- 14.5-inch portrait-oriented infotainment touchscreen with built-in Google Android Automotive services
- 9-inch digital driver display and 9.5-inch head-up display
- Recaro-developed seats with standard ventilation and massage functions in the rear
- Digital rearview mirror replacing the conventional rear window, similar to the Polestar 4
- Glass roof measuring 2 meters long and 125 cm wide, the largest ever fitted to a Polestar
Storage options include 365 liters in the rear boot, an underfloor compartment with bag hooks, and 62 liters in the front trunk.
Practicality and Comfort
Marketed as a 4+1 grand tourer, the rear seats prioritize comfort over outright practicality. Legroom is generous, though taller passengers may find headroom tight. The middle seat functions as a control unit and armrest, but can be raised for occasional use.
Compared to the Taycan, the Polestar 5 offers a more spacious and potentially more comfortable rear cabin, though Porsche maintains an advantage in overall luggage capacity and estate-style versatility with its Cross Turismo variant.
Market Position and Rivals
With its blend of supercar acceleration, long-distance capability, and premium craftsmanship, the NEW Polestar 5 aims directly at high-end EV competitors, particularly the Porsche Taycan. While the Taycan Turbo S remains quicker at 0–60 mph in just 2.1 seconds, the Polestar 5’s focus on range and Scandinavian luxury provides a strong counterpoint.
Pricing has not yet been officially confirmed, but Polestar has hinted at a premium price point to match its flagship positioning.
What’s Next for Polestar
The Polestar 5 is expected to enter production alongside the upcoming Polestar 6, a fully electric roadster slated for 2026. Beyond that, the brand plans to introduce the Polestar 7 in 2028, serving as the new entry-level model to replace the Polestar 2.
With the 5, Polestar has established a clear identity as a standalone performance EV brand, no longer reliant on Volvo underpinnings. If the driving experience matches the impressive specifications, the NEW Polestar 5 could emerge as a true Porsche Taycan rival.
